Close to 10,000 people attended the parade, according to a New York Times article published on September 6, 1882. Marchers carried signs bearing slogans like “Eight Hours for a Legal Day’s Work” and “Less Hours and More Pay.” The New York Times called the demonstration “pleasant” and “orderly,” although it noted that the parade’s organizers expected closer to 30,000 or 40,000 laborers to show up and support the march.

As an etsy seller, I personally don’t think it’s unethical to list an item in any blog post (even a DIY one,) as long as the link takes you back to the item listing, and/or the creator is given credit. This one just happens to have been deactivated, maybe because the seller did it, or it’s possible etsy did. Either way, even if the item was copyrighted, someone crafty could make something similar for personal use (but, from what I’ve seen, not of the same quality unless they’re experienced with printing on fabrics!) Most sellers are up on their SEO and google stats, and it appears this one’s sales haven’t been hurt by their item being posted all over the web. 😉
Dressing in costume is one of the most common and recognizable traditions that dates back thousands of years to celebrate one of the oldest holidays, Halloween. It was the Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago, that were believed to wear the first "costumes" consisting of animal heads and skins, during the bonfire celebration of Samhain.  Even though adult costumes have come a long way from the "animal heads and skins" that the Celts wore, the desire for people to dress up in costume and celebrate a special occasion is still in our blood.

Shawn Thorsson has made a bunch of fantastic costumes. He planned a Halo-themed build for Halloween 2008, but then was deployed to Afghanistan. The project was finally completed the next year. Thorsson fabricated armor from the video game world of Halo, painted them in different colors, and dressed his friends as the characters from the Red vs. Blue series. He posted lots of pictures to show you the process.
Our extensive selection of costumes for adults includes a wide range of themes, styles and sizes for all body types, including plus-size costumes. We carry adult costumes from your favorite TV shows, movies and video games, as well as classic – and easy – Halloween costumes for adults of all shapes and sizes. More about humor than horror? Be sure to check out our collection of funny adult Halloween costumes so you can be the talk of the party!

If you were a factory worker in the 1880s, you were probably toiling away at your job for an average of 60 hours a week, and it wasn't unheard of for textile laborers in New York to make only 75 cents a day, which was a paltry sum, even for the time. To bring attention to these unfair working conditions, labor organizers coordinated the first Labor Day parade on Tuesday, September 5, 1882.

I made the Major Toht costume in a single afternoon. I woke up that morning thinking I was going to skip Halloween (too much work in my day job as a comic artist) but all of my friends flipped out and pressured me into it. I managed to scrape all of the props together by chance. The melty face is a Captain America movie Red Skull mask with flesh-coloured paint dribbled over it.

I made my ear “fins” from floral wire and tulle, and meticulously hand sewed sequins. I wore a nude tank top and pinned my hand sewn shells on. Then I sewed a fin, using a skirt as a pattern, and added tulle fins (again, meticulously hand sequined.) I was covered in glitter and blue and green makeup, and found that delightfully tacky wig at Goodwill. Don’t worry – it was new and unused!

For more than 125 years, Americans have celebrated Labor Day on the first Monday of every September, but the origins of this holiday have been somewhat lost to time. Now it's seen as the unofficial end of summer (and hot dog season), the dreaded return to school for kids across the country, and a time to score a great deal on a mattress. But with more than a century of history to sift through, you'd be forgiven for not knowing about the holiday's roots. So from the true story of its beginnings, to the final word on whether or not you can wear white afterward, here are eight facts about Labor Day.

Classic, regal and... who are we kidding? Toga! Toga! Toga! Nothing quite sparks the party spirit like the look of the ancient Greeks. Made famous by fraternity houses, the toga has a lot of things going for it. The look is quick and simple, with a whole plethora of easy ways to accessorize. If you want to go all out, you can grab some sandals and gold wreath crowns to look like Greek royalty, or you can simply toss on the toga costume. And all it takes to get the party started while wearing this costume style is to shout the word "Toga!" and repeat ad nauseam.
