A few years ago, redditor CampingIsInTents posted a picture of her Tippi Hedren costume and got a rousing response. The idea references a popular movie, but you won't see other people wearing it at the same party. She bought the birds, but had to alter the wings to make them just right. The idea has been used by creative costume-makers a couple of times before, even on TV.

My personal favorites from the last few years: Proper Young Lady, complete with leather bound “books” balanced my head and penny loafers; Mother Nature with butterflies, birds, leaves, and glitter all over and in my hair (inspired from Martha Stewart’s “Grey Lady” costume); and Medusa, a sheer black toga over leggings and a men’s long-sleeve black tee where i split the sleeves on the outside and cut the neckline to match the toga and decorated everything with gold and bronze paints, rope belts, decorated gladiator sandals, and snakes glued to hair clips that slithered through and stood up in my hair.

On May 1, 1886, 35,000 workers went on strike in Chicago as part of a larger organized labor protest across the country. For the first two days, the protests and demonstrations were peaceful, but by May 3, violence broke out between laborers and police during a protest at Chicago's McCormick Reaper Works factory, leaving several workers wounded or dead. The incident encouraged anarchist labor leaders to call for another protest the following day in Haymarket Square, where violence broke out again after police attempted to disband the crowd. At that point, an anonymous individual threw a bomb at the police, killing one officer at the scene. The police retaliated, and when all was said and done, seven officers and (at least) one civilian were killed in the chaos, and plenty more in the crowd were injured.

Fans of the TV show The Walking Dead will recognize the Governor and his undead daughter. Redditor TriforceKing and his sister wore this last Halloween. It helped that he already resembled the actor David Morrissey somewhat. A few people pointed out that the Governor didn’t lose his eye until after his daughter was gone, but who cares? It’s Halloween!

In 1887, Oregon became the first state to celebrate Labor Day as a legal holiday. In 1894, the rest of the United States followed suit when President Cleveland signed the holiday into law after political pressure created by his suppression of the Pullman Strike. Cleveland, aware that he needed to appease the labor movement, pressed for nationwide recognition of the first Monday in September as Labor Day.

Shawn Thorsson has made a bunch of fantastic costumes. He planned a Halo-themed build for Halloween 2008, but then was deployed to Afghanistan. The project was finally completed the next year. Thorsson fabricated armor from the video game world of Halo, painted them in different colors, and dressed his friends as the characters from the Red vs. Blue series. He posted lots of pictures to show you the process.

Another iconic flick you grew up with as a kid is undoubtedly The Princess Bride. Well, now you’re finally old enough to do a proper Westley and Princess Buttercup! We’re proud to be the home of the officially licensed Princess Bride costumes, and we’ve got ‘em all, even Fezzik if you’re feeling Andre the Giant sized! Evan Booth's costume for Halloween 2006 seemed to be a nondescript "dude in a wig" until you looked at the GAPING HOLE in his midsection! This was accomplished with a camera in the back of the shirt that recorded a background scene and fed it to a travel-size DVD player in the front that displayed the backdrop. In 2008, artist Nicole Magne used the idea for a costume recreating a scene from the movie Death Becomes Her where Goldie Hawn has a hole blown through her body. The creation process is detailed on her blog, and the Instructables version is available if you'd like to try this yourself.

She's the one called Sailor Moon and she's a pretty big deal. Sailor Moon is a classic when it comes to anime, so she's a staple in comic con crowds. That makes her an easy pick when you're trying to put together a great outfit to wear for a bit of cosplay. It won't give you any of the powers that she normally has, but it will get you quite a few positive comments when you head out wearing your Sailor Moon costume. Just make sure you're rocking the long blonde pig-tails. (We’ve got the wig if your own locks aren’t quite cutting it!)

More people are going to college, taking longer to become financially settled, have easier access to birth control, and are embarking on demanding careers that put family life on the back burner. In addition to having children later in life, the average cost of raising a child has increased dramatically over the generations, so one or two kids might be all some couples can afford. These factors all add up to create smaller families, which means we’ll likely see fewer middle children throughout the country in future decades if these trends continue. And without them, we’ll lose out on all of the remarkable traits seen below.
